»anhalten, Halt machen«: Die niederd.-mitteld. Form von ↑ stopfen bedeutet seit dem 16. Jh. auch »im Lauf aufhalten« (eigentlich »durch ein Hindernis sperren«) und wird so seit dem 18. Jh. in der Jagd (»die Meute stoppen«) und besonders im Seewesen gebraucht (»ein Tau, eine Maschine stoppen«). Hier und in der neueren Sportsprache (beachte die Ableitung Stopper »Mittelläufer im Fußballspiel«) hat auch das entsprechende engl. to stop »anhalten« eingewirkt. Die Befehlsform stopp! »halt!« (engl. stop!) ist als seemännischer Zuruf seit Anfang des 19. Jh.s bezeugt, ihre Substantivierung Stopp »Einhalt« schon im 18. Jh. Die Zusammensetzung Stoppuhr »Uhr zum genauen Messen von Zeitspannen« erscheint Anfang des 19. Jh.s als Lehnübersetzung von engl. stop-watch (18. Jh.).
